FAQs

How Much Will it Cost?

Good Question ! The simple answer is that  prices range from  £ 75 for a simple wall motif  to £2000 for a very large contemporary canvas. The painting I do is bespoke and I can be flexible in working towards your budget and tastes.  Complexity of the subject matter, size, framing and delivery are taken into account in pricing and I am happy to discuss your options.

Popular sizes and styles have been 50cm square abstract canvasses which I price from £450 and the A4 canvas portraits from a photo start at  £150.

Mural Prices – I don’t charge by the square metre like some muralists because a simple design in a large room could take the same time as a small room with several intricate characters.

If you have any question and/ or would like an estimated quotation please contact me here, I am always happy to discuss prices.

Are any of the works in the gallery for sale?

Not currently. Most  of these pictures are original pieces commissioned by a client. The gallery portfolio shows the kind of work I can produce and to provide inspiration and a starting point for discussion for your own ideas .

How do I go about Commissioning a painting or mural?

  1. Normally we would have a telephone conversation to discuss ideas and themes that you were interested in. You may have a firm idea of what you want or would like to discuss ideas for artwork suitable for a particular space. It is useful if you can email me photographs or images of the subject matter or type of work you like and  if you have something specific in mind.
  2. Meeting and free consultation. For Murals this would be at the site of the mural and I would bring along my portfolio and any visual references that may be useful.  For portraits, it is good to meet the subject  but a selection of photographs will help if that is not possible.

At this stage I can give a reasonably clear estimate on price but bear in mind  initial ideas and levels of detail can change and evolve from this point.

There is no charge or obligation for these meetings although I would expect the client to bear the cost if significant travel from my base in Essex was involved.

  3. Should you like my work and go ahead with a commission then I will draw up a brief which both parties sign.

This includes details on visual reference points and rough sketches/ timescale for delivery / any framing or delivery requirements and quotation*.

At this stage I require a non returnable deposit of £50 for materials and to book my time. The final balance is paid upon completion.

*Additions and alterations to the artists brief once the artwork is underway may be accommodated if practical but may affect your final price.

The artist retains the copyright although you buy the work.

What materials do you use?

I use acrylic paints for canvasses and mural painting. These are water soluble, quick drying and non toxic. Acrylic paint is also very elastic and crack resistant. Depending on mediums added to the paint a matt or sheeny finish can be achieved.  Once dry acrylic will not smudge or wash away and can be (cautiously!) wiped! Varnishing will further protect the surface of the image.

Modern acrylics  can produce the effects of oils without the expense or long drying time. I have put prints in the gallery to give an idea of different imagery I enjoy producing although unfortunately I am not printmaking at the moment. (Trying to track down a print studio locally).

Do I need to move everything out of the room to have a mural painted?

No. I can work around  the contents although I may need furniture moved back from walls . I’d ask that fragile and valuable items are removed. I’d discuss with you whether a design should continue behind pictures or furniture  and whether pictures need to come down. I use dust sheets to protect surfaces and will tidy up so that the room is useable between painting sessions if the job takes a few days.

Do Mural walls need preparation?

Ideally  the walls will be flat and painted with clean emulsion with any holes and cracks filled and sanded. If the wall is porous it would need to be sealed prior to painting, I can advise on this. Having said that the Mouse  Magic mural wall was ancient and bumpy and no problem to paint!
